It’s not every day that one of Cyprus’ best mixologists teaches you how to make a drink. A strawberry drink, no less. I’ve noticed that when strawberries appear in the stores, I tend to become a little strawberry obsessed. Like, I see them and I immediately buy two packs. Sometimes, I buy more. I google strawberry recipes. I put them in everything.
But justifiably so in my opinion. I am a sucker for a good, sweet, strawberry. And their season is pretty short in Cyprus. In Cyprus I find it can be challenging to find those little, small, very sweet strawberries that I regularly find in North America. I started going to the farmers’ markets in search and have found some there (click here to find out more about Cyprus farmers’ markets).
I am also planning a little upcoming party in a few weeks – as it is my birthday. I am turning 34, and it’s as good an age as any to have a party if you ask me. Particularly as I am just in a happy mood these days and life feels so different from two years ago. Life then was a bit (a lot) more in flux. (I had just quit my London law job and decided to move to Cyprus.) So I was really excited to learn how to make a great cocktail for b-day night. Last week I went down to in(Theory) and met with Valentin Antonov to learn how to make one of his creations – a delicious strawberry cocktail which is called “(in)Theory blossom”.
For those of you who don’t know about Valentin Antonov, he is one of Cyprus leading mixologists who works at in(Theory) – one of Cyprus best gastro-pubs located in Saripolou Square, Limassol. Valentin has been a mixologist for about 13 years. He has placed first in the Finlandia Vodka Cup in Bulgaria. He recently placed fifth in the Cyprus Havana Club Grand Prix and 3rd in the flair division of the Cyprus National In Classic Style and Flair Competition. (“Flair” is where you literally make drinks while throwing bottles in the air – as if making incredible cocktails wasn’t enough, Valentine also makes them in style.)
He greeted me as always in his friendly and kind manner and proceeded to show me how to make this sweet strawberry cocktail.I love a sweet cocktail. Particularly where the fruit flavours come through but not the alcohol itself. This was one of those drinks. Strawberry puree, jasmine syrup and fresh lime juice. Don’t be put off the fact that just because this is a super delicious drink made by one of Cyprus’ best mixologists that you can’t make it yourself. You totally can, which is why it’s so cool that Valentin shared this recipe with us.
Having said that, when you aren’t in the mood for DIY cocktails, but are in the mood for a great setting, delicious food and gorgeous cocktails, you also know where to go. ; ) Thanks Valentin and in(Theory) for sharing this cocktail with Aφrodite’s Kitchen.
